One must be a genius megalomaniac (and a coward) to have the idea to build a palace in a 300 meters high rock. Indeed, after executing his father, Dhatusena and betraying his brother, Moggallana, the king Kashyapa left his city Anuradapura to hide in Sigiriya (සීගිරිය, pronounced See-Gee-Ree-Yuh). Located in the heart of the island, he strategically chose this place to protect himself from being attacked. This enormous rock is situated in the middle of trees and lakes, giving a surprising view on the surroundings. Ideal to keep an eye on the enemy! Anyway, this was the small history class moment! Enough with the jokes, I had the occasion to visit this monument this summer for the second time and it was breathtaking. Literally.
